General Gives Bad Advice To Troops In Combat

HEAD OF ARMY RESEARCH ADVISES COMBAT TROOPS TO DISASSEMBLE WEAPONS UP TO EIGHT TIMES A DAY!


In a recent press release, Major General Roger A. Nadeau, Aberdeen Proving Grounds (APG) Research Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) commander, gave this perplexing advice to our troops in combat:

“Even if the manual says you should clean your weapon twice a day, if you’ve got time, clean it four times a day, if you’ve got more time, clean it eight times a day because the one time you didn’t clean it may be the time it jams.” (“Army stands by official CLP products,” J.D. Leipold, Army News Service, May 19, 2006)

This advice by itself is absurd. Repeated disassembly means parts can be lost. But more importantly, a disassembled weapon is NOT COMBAT READY! Taking a weapon out of service eight times a day in a combat zone is potentially deadly advice.

Even more absurd is the reason why such frequent cleanings are necessary. Wet CLP gun oil attracts sand and dust to the wet gunmetal like a magnet. In sandy, dusty environments, a wet, oily weapon gets dirty automatically – without even firing it. MG Nadeau’s advice, in and of itself, is proof that the Army’s 26-year-old Military Specification (MilSpec) CLP is out-dated and is a poor choice for desert warfare.

For desert warfare, the Army needs a dry lubricant that does not collect dust and sand – a lubricant that keeps weapons dry-lubricated for thousands of rounds of firing and does not require constant field stripping in combat zones.

Such a lubricant exists – MILITEC-1. In 2001/02, very successful joint exercises were held in Kuwait involving Kuwaiti Land Forces (KLF) and the U.S. Army Tenth Mountain Division. The results of using MILITEC-1 were remarkable. Those that lubricated their firearms with MILITEC-1 experienced no jamming, double feeds, or any other malfunctions whatsoever. Those that did not use MILITEC-1 had real problems with their small arms in the dust and 140°F heat.

Yet MG Nadeau continues to insist troops use MilSpec CLP lubricant. Why? Because he bases his advice on simulated lab tests while ignoring the real-world experiences of our combat troops in the field. These simulated tests were artificially constructed in such a way that MilSpec CLP passes while all other lubricants fail. The simulated tests (1) do not use real sand, (2) test the weapons while they are dripping wet with oil, and (3) are conducted in a controlled indoor laboratory environment, instead of using actual field conditions.

MG Nadeau is evidently relying on the “wash-out” principal for our troops: Cleaning and re-lubing a weapon (fired or not) will “wash out” the sand and dust that has been attracted to the weapon since you last cleaned it. This dangerous advice proves conclusively that the more you use MilSpec CLP, the more necessary it becomes to field-strip and clean it again – and again – to keep it from jamming.

By ignoring the lessons our troops have learned the hard way – in combat – MG Nadeau does them a terrible disservice. He is denying them the means to keep their weapons combat-ready without constant disassembly and cleaning. Keeping weapons dripping in oil and taking them apart eight times day for cleaning whether they have been fired or not is not the best advice for our troops in harm’s way.

MG Nadeau should listen to our troops. The troops know what they need. They ask for MILITEC-1 by name. Since Operation Enduring Freedom began, Militec, Inc. has received over 25,000 email requests and supplied over 300,000 free bottles of MILITEC-1 to our troops. In the last two years alone, before MG Nadeau eliminated MILITEC-1 from the supply system, troops ordered over one million bottles of MILITEC-1.

Our Troops deserve a weapon lube that works in the desert. MILITEC-1 does; MilSpec CLP does not. The many weapon manufacturers and federal law enforcement agencies that recommend MILITEC-1, do not use or recommend the use of MilSpec CLP.

Major General Roger A. Nadeau’s erroneous, dangerous, and potentially deadly advice must be retracted immediately.
